about

Traditional English, and Traditional French
Arranged by Al Petteway and Amy White

The original version of this medley, "The Coventry Carol / Patapan," appeared on the album, "A Holiday Sampler" with Robin Bullock. The album was released on Al & Amy's Fairewood Studios label in 2001. The album was licensed, and released again a year later on the classical Dorian Recordings label, along with a few extra tracks. Dorian ended up behaving rather badly, though, so all rights for the recordings reverted back to the artists, and the albums went out of print -- hence this post on Bandcamp.

The Coventry Carol, "Lullay, lulla, thou little tiny child," dates from between 1400 and 1450 when it was first performed for the Pageant of the Shearmen and the Tailors in the town of Coventry, England. Queen Margaret in 1456, Richard III in 1484 and Henry VII in 1492 witnessed this traditional pageant.

Al and Amy both used "E-bows" (electronic bows) on their acoustic guitars to create the eerie organ-like effect at the beginning of the track. The pull from these unique magnetic devices causes the metal strings to vibrate and create sound without being plucked.

"Patapan" is a carol from Burgundy, France attributed to Bernard de la Monnoye who lived from 1641 to 1728. The lyrics refer to a fleute (or flute) and a tamborin (tambourine), which is a type of drum originally from Provence. Tamborin also refers to a folk dance from that region, as well as the music played for the dance.
