about

Traditional English - arranged by Al Petteway & Amy White

This instrumental version of Greensleeves originally appeared on "A Holiday Sampler" with Robin Bullock, released on Al & Amy's Fairewood Studios label in 2001. It was released again, the following year, on the classical Dorian Recordings label, along with a few additional tracks. Dorian ended up behaving rather badly, though, so all rights for the recordings reverted back to the artists, and the album went out of print — hence this post on Bandcamp.

Greensleeves was first published in 1652 but the melody is believed to be nearly a hundred years older. Lyrics had been published as early as 1584 in "A Handful of Pleasant Delights by Clement Robinson and Divers Others," and it was mentioned in Act II, Scene I of Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor." The original author is still unknown, although some speculated that Henry VIII wrote it for Anne Boleyn circa 1530. Not long after the American Civil War, William Chatterton Dix used the melody for his Christmas classic, "What Child Is this?"
