about

by Al Petteway and Amy White

This tune was first recorded for a special project to benefit the homeless in the Washington, DC area. The title refers to the unique landscape that only winter can bring -- in particular the lovely architecture of bare tree branches against a winter sky. It also refers to the quotes, or branches of Christmas carols that are interwoven with the original melody and rhythm.

This second recording of the tune appeared later on "A Holiday Sampler" with Robin Bullock, released on Al & Amy's Fairewood Studios label in 2001. The music from that album was licensed and released a year later, with additional tracks, on the classical Dorian Recordings label, under the title, "A Midnight Clear." Dorian ended up behaving rather badly, though, so all rights for the recordings reverted back to the artists -- hence this post on Bandcamp.
